Chiclana and the beach la Barrosa are not well known as spots of surf and kitesurf in Cadiz. Much less populated than other well known places like Yerbabuena in Barbate, El Palmar in Conil or Tarifa. It has great waves in the winter and is a good alternative if you are enchanted by kiting. Easy access. Kitesurf is a rather young sport, even though, it was already known since antic times in China and Indonesia, where kites were used. The discovery of kiting as sport as such, was made by the French brothers Legagno and developed into one of the most important sports throughout the world.
Kitesuf, kiteboard or also called flysurf, is a special way to navigate. To observe this sport is quite spectacular, most of all for people, who see it for the first time, as great jumps and acrobatics are practiced by the experienced surfist.
The best way to start you in this sport is to make a course with a professional instructor, as kitesurf is a high risk sport and it is important to learn the basic rules of security and procedure, in order to resolve difficult situations.
The beginners classes consist in one part of theory, explaining about security, winds, etc. The other part is practice, which starts on the beach, learning how to handle the kite. This is followed by the training in the water, where “bodydrag” is practiced. This is to move in the water without the board. This allows you to become used being in the water whilst working the kite, consequently it is learned how to got onto the board. And with the “waterstart” or first run on the water with board and kite, this will be the beginning of thrilling sports experiences.
This sport is taught and practicad all along the Costa de la Luz, much in Tarifa, Caños de Meca and Chiclana.
Inscriptions for courses can be made in any shop specialising in surf equippment and the courses are held by professional trainers. We recommend Tarifa, Chiclana, Conil and Caños de Meca, which have all very good instructors and and magnificient spots to practice this sport.
Characteristics of the Sancti Petri spot:
If Levante is blowing in Caños, but with low tide, Sancti Petri may be the place where to meet waves during the summer. Usually here is a constant wind, however weaker than the one in Tarifa.
Between the beach and the island facing it (with the Sancti Petri castle), this is a more profound region where it is ideal to practice great jumps, as it is easy to gain great speed. Here a few metres of quality front side and back side surf can be practised. On the right of the spot, is an area with approx. 300m of shallow waters, having ground levante, it is perfect to gain speed.
For surf or bodyboard, almost all of Barrosa beach offers quality surf conditions, best however, during the winter. Classic spots there are El Palmar or la Yerbabuena.
This are the perfect spots without any danger and ideal for beginners as well as more experienced surfers. |
