Route of the Vereda de la Asomada Description of the Route of the Vereda de la Asomada:
Length: 5,6 km
Route: Linear
Difficulty: Easy
Sight-Seeing Highlights:
Country scenery with livestock paths, seaside vegetation, fauna and flora.
Beginning of the Route:
We start on the Pago del Humo Highway, in the area around the bridge over highway A-48. In the rainy season, this route can be difficult to take because of large puddles, or slight flooding. It is also not recommended in the hot summer months, as there is no shelter from the sun along almost the entire path. This route is best to take in Spring or Fall. To finish this route, you can choose to finish on the Cordel de los Marchantes (Path of the Marching), or on the highway to Medina, about 1.5 km away.
Description:
This route goes entirely along a livestock path, with a legal width of 20,89 meters, still in use for animals. The path begins in the Descansadero del Ejido de la Feria (a place), where you can find the Well of the Asomada and a Magical Point, named La Cruz de Carrascal. It is at this point where the livestock fair used to take place, which influenced the actual fair that takes place today (Feria de San Antonio).
The path crosses with Direction E, passing through a residential zone, which we leave and go to the right towards the Cruz and Rodeo Lagunes, and cross the Arroyo de la Cueva (Cave Brook), a tribute to the River Iro. With some luck you might be able to see an otter or two.
All of the path is horizontal, appearing unlevel at certain points in the road. Except for some zones in which you can see Mediterranean scrubs and bushes (wild olive trees, Mastic Shrubbs, and Palm Hearts), what we find is cultivated terrain, dedicated to plantlife that grows in dry climates, pastures and uncultivated land for livestock and game preserve.
From the highest point in this path we can observe the countryside of low ridges and hills between which the city center of Medina Sidonia is tucked away. We can also see from here the Temple of Santa Ana.
Before finishing this route at the descent of the watermeadow of the river, we will come across the Vereda del Alamíllo, and then continue until the Descansadero del Pozo de Lázaro, where the road ends, and unites with the Cordel de los Marchantes. In La Mesa Farmhouse, situated at the right of the road, is an archaelogical dig site, where the rest of prehisoric people lived, including remains from both the Roman and Islamic Period of Spain´s history. |
